symbolic expression over words

2010 February 9

fellow questers…

when outlining the hero’s journey in the soil.. yeah… not many chalk boards outside :) … i often ask ‘wild-self’ questers to symbolically express different concepts…

guiding questers involves teaching via impressionism and symbolism… we minimize words… maximize hands… enhance creative outlets… engage in spontaneous construction…

on a recent ‘wild-self” quest walk  with allison hodge … i asked her to symbolize ‘threshold’… in hero’s journey terms… threshold…. is the line between the known and unknown… societal self and ‘wild-self’… consciousness and unconsciousness…

in the picture below… you can see allison’s usage of sticks to make a door… inside the door is a little stick protruding upwards… symbolizing a lock…

some questers have dug a small trench… some have built up a mound of dirt.. others have used an entire tree trunk to symbolize ‘threshold’…

the mind’s machinery is images… while ‘threshold’ is an archetypal groove… a collective pattern of habits girding collective unconsciousness… particular symbolic manifestations are different for everybody…

in pursuit of quest… in longing for holistic self… we tap the symbolic manifestations tucked within our ‘wild-self’… not only to round us out but to help us feel alive…

alive,

gino

quester question:

how are you incorporating symbolic expressions in your daily life as a form of expression?

quester tip:

any easy way to get started symbolically expressing your ‘wild-self” is to map your dreams… waking and sleeping… though not in words… get crayons and markers… pencils and pens… draw/symbolize your dreams… if you’re persistent… you’ll travel into the unconscious… not just your own… but collective psyche…
