edit the ‘wild’ out?
fellow questers…
below you will see two videos… the visuals are the same… the impression is different though… on ‘wild self’ quest walks… i emphasize how connection to the wild evokes the wild within…
we had some big storms recently in san francisco… storms that generated intense ocean activity… providing a great opportunity to take questers into a visceral setting and thus into their ‘wild self’… questers frolicked… played in the sand… ran in the water… smiles radiated… you could see and feel the sense of aliveness in the quester’s eyes… wide open…
as a guide… it is my job to stay out of nature’s way… to prepare myself and others to let the vibrational power in… so this was a quest of little dialogue… we always try to stay out of our heads as much as possible but this time even more… the more we stayed out of our head and in our feet (when my questers kick off their city shoes:)… we could feel the presence of the holly force… you know… sometimes we talk ourselves out of awe… silence… commonly misunderstood… is a frequently a portal to higher vibrational experiences…
so why two videos… when i first started this submission i only included the version where the wind was removed… why… because upon first impression… the sound sounded annoying… my filmmaker training conditions me to think this way… the assumption being that anything that is annoying is ‘bad’ sound and can’t be a fit…
but what if the ‘bad’ sound is the ‘right’ fit… what if i am trying to give audiences a glimpse into an experience… will words alone do… like i do with the edited version… which sounds so ‘clean’…
i would argue that the sound of wind is the content… like marshall mcluhan says… the medium is the message… what i say is secondary… my intention of editing the first video into a seemingly ‘clean’ video did more to edit the ‘wild’ out…
so to all of you in the business of expression, creation, and nature… be cautious of the temptation to scratch footage because of bad sound… ask yourself instead… is the sound serving me…
alive,
gino
