the story within

2009 December 8

fellow questers…

whether it is speeches i keynote… or books i write… or films i direct…i’ve learned we have an insatiable appetite for stories.. we are intuitively interested in the human condition… and our part in it… and stories more than anything are the vehicle for realizing that interest… for stories reflect us back onto ourself… our authentic self

as conscious beings… our life’s work is to realize our inner self… our wild self… and it is stories… cutting through our flesh… regardless of culture… that make their way into our soul-yearning bodies… to help us make sense of who we are…

characters help us face our  journeys… we watch how they overcome challenges… like leaping lakes to slay dragons (okay, that’s the little boy in the sandbox speaking)… then… wham… the character’s life is in peril… ready to fall into the abyss… yet beats back darkness by relying on a larger, mysterious force greater than herself… to return home with her journey’s gift…

as a quest guide… the process involves turning the traditional storytelling mindset inside out… we think it is others who create stories… that stories come from without… from the exterior world… yet it is this little cognitive bugbear that handicaps us since the most telling story is within… when we journey inward… to explore the wild self… we learn we have unrealized stories.. and as joseph campbell makes so clear… for our stories/wild self to be realized… journeys must be taken…

alive,

gino
